‘Wicking’ herbicides
onto weeds whips
problem in hort crops
COLUMBIA, Mo. From
soybeans to strawberries, one way
to whip weeds is by “wickmg”
them.
“A ropewick application of
herbicides is an effective way to
control weeds that stand taller
than the crops in which they are
growing,” said Delbert Hemphill,
University of Missouri-Columbia
horticultural researcher.
Herbicides are “wicked” out of
the herbicide container by a rope
that works like a lamp wick. The
herbicide-wetted rope then wipes
across the top of weeds, killing
them without harming the crop.
The technique has already
proved successful with agronomic
crops. For example, soybean
growers use the method to control
johnsongrass in growing beans.
Hemphill is now trying to prove
the ropewick’s effectiveness and
safety around horticultural crops
like strawberries, and cucurbits
(muskmelons, watermelons,
cucumbers, etc.) to the satisfac
tion of the Environmental
Protection Agency.
Hemphill wants to use the
technique to apply chemicals like
glyphosate (Roundup) or 2, 4-D to
horticultural crops. The tnck is to
wick up enough herbicides to do
the job without any dripping onto
the crop.
“We can probably get the data
we need (on the safety and ef
fectiveness of these chemicals)
within a year, but it may take a
couple of years to perfect the
technique and to get EPA ap
proval,” Hemphill said.
Growers of horticultural crops
often have a problem of winter
annuals (weeds) that germinate in

Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 18,1981—D23
the fall, overwinter as small
rosettes, then take off m spring.
With the rope wick application,
Hemphill hopes to hit these weeds
as soon as he can in the spring, and
then come back a week or so later
to get those missed the first time
around.
The weeds Cm horticultural
crops) are many, and the pay off of
controlling them is good.
Growers are bothered by
pigweed, ragweed, lambsquarter,
wheat that grows out of the straw
mulch, wild lettuce, mare’s tail,
and many others.
If these weeds can be controlled,
the crops will be easier to pick by
hand or machine, and yields will be
much higher, Hemphill said.
Rope wick applicators can be
made of any length to suit different
row widths.
They will be mounted on the
front of tractors and driven across
fields for fast and effective weed
control.
As part of his research, Hemphill
is experimenting with different
types of ropes to find the kind that
will feed the herbicide fast without
dripping.
“One that looks good so far has a
core made of fibrous material and
a loose nylon extenor,” he said.
