DlO—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 18,1981 Sometimes , it’s a long road back home For a lot of town and city kids, a warm, sunny July afternoon might mean a game of baseball or splashing in the pool. But not so for many farm children. This trio of barefoot youngsters from northern Lancaster County had to harvest some of the bounty of all the recent ram and sunshine. Instead of splashing in a pool, they waded through stalks of sweet com much taller than themselves. And after picking the large, ears of silver kernels, the job was only half finished. After harvest, the crop must be taken back home. It starts off as a three-person job - one sister pulling, another pushing and little brother lending a hand. But it pays to be the youngest member ot the harvesting crew. You can hitch a ride while your sisters continue the journey. And sometimes, it’s a long, long road back home.
