Premium list for Eastern
National now available
TIMONIUM, Md. Entry
blanks and premium lists are now
available for the 35th Annual
Eastern National Livestock Show
to be held at the Maryland State
Fair Grounds here October U-11.
The entry deadline is August 15,
according to John Wildesen, show
manager, who added entries
received after that date and until
September 26 will be charged a
double fee. No entries will be taken
after September 26.
More than $50,000 in premiums
will be paid to winning livestock
exhibitors by the Eastern National
and breed associations.
Wildesen said there will be
judging classes tor eight breeds of
cattle, two more than in previous
years. The new beet breed classes
will be Limousin and Chianma.
Other beef judging shows will be
Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford,
Charolais, Shorthorn and Sim
mental.
Ten major breeds of sheep will
be shown and judged by Richard
Smith, of Ohio State University.
More than 50 hogs which have been
on a feed test since last June also
will be evaluated live before they
are carcass evaluated by swine
experts from the University of
Maryland.

1 read in your paper recently
about a Jersey herd dispersal. 1
was wondering if you would have
any information about Jersey
cows, including the average price
of registered and grade Jerseys
and some average herd dispersal
prices?

- Mr. Hackett: According to
Florence Robinson, secretary of
the' Pennsylvania Jersey Cattle
Club, Jersey cows in the state last
year averaged $1,742.65.
A registered Jersey cow would
cost about $l,OOO-$1,500; while a
grade Jersey sells for around $7OO
- she said.
There have been no local
dispersals lately, but a recent sale
held m Ohio had an average of
$1,028 per head.

A simple recipe includes: %
bushel of flaked lime, 1 peck salt, 3
pounds ground rice, % pounds
Spanish whiting, and 1 pound glue.
To prepare the whitewash, mix
the lime with 12 gallons of boiling
water, keeping this mixture
covered. Strain and add salt that
has been dissolved in 6 gallons of
warm water. Boil the ground nee
in approximately 1 gallon of water
until it is a thin paste. Then mix
Spanish whiting and glue together
with warm water. Finally mix
everything together and let it stand
for several days m a large kettle.
Before applying reheat mixture by
warming on stove or open fire.
To apply the wash use a brush
and keep the material as hot as
possible.
Whitewash can be applied to any
dry surface. It is recommended for
use in barns to help bnghten them
and, in the process, eliminate
spiders. It also helps to protect the
wood, bnck, or stone to which it is
applied.

on whitewash and its uses.
