Wearing the sparkling tiara for all Berkshire breeders in the country is York County’s 17-year-old Beth Holtzmger. Beth has been the state’s Berkshire queen for the past two years, however this is the first tune she competed for the national title. The lOft-year-old contest was held here last week during the Berkshire National 'Type Con ference. According to Beth, she couldn’t believe she had been chosen to Lebanon Co. first in Goodyear contest LEBANON The Lebanon County Conservation District has taken first place honors for Penn sylvania m the 34th Annual Goodyear Conservation Program. The Lebanon District was selected by a state judging com mittee tor its accomplishments m resource management, according to Ray Oviatt, awards program director. But the excitement and honors were hers and Beth will be taking her enthusiasm for the breed to many national shows and type conferences throughout the coming year. She received a $250 scholarship from the swine breeders to be used toward her education. Also competing in the national contest were Berkshire queens December an expense-paid, vacation-study trip to the Wigwam resort and Goodyear Farms, Litchfield Park, Arizona will be Boyd Hitz of Lebanon. There he will be joining 52 representatives from other first place districts throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Hitz was selected as the county’s outstanding cooperator for the year and serves as a district board member. Beth is not only a Berkshire enthusiast because she wears the breed’s crown, she also raises the swine at her family’s farm near Red Lion. Presently her purebred herd consists of 20 head, stemming from an FFA chapter chain gilt she was awarded in 10th grade plus a bred gilt she purchased that year from Clayton Wmebark, Rochester Mills. Beth, the daughter of Lester and Edna Holtzmger, is a senior at Red Lion High School. Summing up her feelings about her coming year as National Berkshire Queen, Beth bubbled, “I’m excited and ready to fly.” Also receiving a plaque will be the Dauphin County Conservation District, the nmnerup contestants. Dauphin’s outstanding cooperator ' is Jean Zell, Elizabethtown. Clinton Conservation District, a first place winner within the past five years and hence ineligible to repeat, was named Honor District in recognition of its continuing achievements.
