Lancaster’s Penn State research lab hosts field day LANDISVILLE - A general field day of wide public interest to farmers, gardeners, and county agents will be held here July 29 at Penn State’s Southeastern Field Research Laboratory. The field day will feature farm and garden crops ranging from com, forages, and soybeans to grapes, flowers, and tomatoes, according to John O. Yocum, superintendent of the research farm. Plot tours will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. “Topics and tours for July 29 should appeal especially to people in the central, south central, and southeastern counties of the state,’’ Yocum said. Flower variety trials will be exhibited for home gardeners. Grapes will be displayed, including both wine and table varieties. Experiments with- forage varieties will be highlighted, in ,eluding fertility studies. Visitors will see plots of kenaf, a fibrous crop under test for possible use in making paper for printing newspapers. Present experiments involve fiber yield as related to the-- most suitable planting rates per acre and the most productive row spacings. Potato growers will see ex periments to control insects, as well as trials with experimental varieties. 'Yocum commented soybean variety trials should attract at tention during the field day. Certain soybean plots also will demonstrate weed control. The research will show double crop ping of no-tillsoybeans. The field day also will show tobacco varieties as well as weed and insect control on tobacco. The Landisville research farm has long been noted for research with tobacco. Tomato growers will see plots devoted to crops for both fresh market and processing. Coming to the farm from the Goat field day Saturday MANHEIM - A Dairy Goat Field Day will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 18 at the Jacob Fisher Farm, near Manheim. The event is being sponsored by the Dutch Country Dairy Goat Club, and all interested persons are invited to attend. From Route 72, north of Lan caster, turn east on Bucknoll Road (about 1 mile south of Manheim and first road to the right, north of the auto auction). Travel about 1 mile to the Fisher Farm, located at the junction of Holly Tree and Bucknoll Roads. In addition to a tour of the Fisher Farm, the program will feature demonstrations on general daily goat management, breeding programs, herd evaluation, con formation and animal selection. There will be ample opportunity for questions. Speaker will' be Richard H. Stoneback, Jr., Amyr Farm, Oxford. In addition to his ex perience as a herdsman, Richard is an experienced showman, and a qualified judge. While attending Penn State, he also worked with Samuel Guss and cared for his goat herd on many occasions.
