Heat stress
hurts hogs
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Hog
producers were urged this week to
take precautions during hot
weather or risk costly breeding
problems in their herds.
Studies show that heat stress
affects both sows and boars and
increases death loss of newborn
pigs, said John Rea, University of
Missouri-Columbia swine
specialist.
With sows, there is a delay in
post-weaning estrus, extended
periods of sows not breeding, and
reduced litter size, he said.
Stressed boars suffer from low
sperm count and sperm motility.
To keep heat stress problems to
a minimum, Rea made these
recommendations:
•'•Maintain boars in a cool en
vironment by using evaporated
coolers, loggers, wallows, shades
and fans.
Breed during the cool parts of
the day (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.).
.'•Maintain a larger herd of
potential replacement gilts.
.•'Overbreed to insure filling
farrowing houses.
✓•Keep sows cool, particularly
during the first 30 days of
gestation.
