Wye Plantation
has new director
QUEENSTOWN - The
Maryland Agricultural Ex
periment Station of the University
of Maryland has appointed
Richard L. Beck, a York county
native, to direct the Wye Angus
cattle program at Wye Plantation.
Beck’s responsibilities at Wye
Plantation will include per
formance testing of cattle,
promotional activities, and the
management of daily operations.
As program manager, he also will
be responsible for coordination of
research and breeding.
Beck succeeds Gordon M.
Cairns, dean emeritus of the
University’s College of
Agriculture, who has managed the
Wye Angus herd for the past three
years. Cairns will continue with
the University as an advisor to the
director of the experiment station,
Lamar Harris.
“We are grateful to Cairns for
his leadership of the program since
the Wye herd was given to the
University in 1978 by Arthur A.
Houghton, Jr. We are fortunate
that his background and ex
perience in livestock and farm
management will continue to be
available to the Experiment
Station”, Harris said.
According to Harris, research at
Wye under Beck’s leadership will
be directed toward the im
provement of beef production
through scientific selection for
efficient and rapid growth; for
optimum reproduction efficiency;
maximizing the quality of forage
utilization in the breeding herd;
and for optimum ratios of lean to
fatty tissues. -
