But when you get a group of experts in the farming field talking on the economics of agriculture, the discussion inevitably leads to the prime concern today among farmers and farm-related businessmen how can the far mer survive detrimental farmland losses, mediocre returns on vital investments, animal welfarists, and rising interest rates? And how long will they be satisfied to just “hang in there?” What began as an effort to educate non-farm personnel in the economics of agriculture led to an eye-opening -experience for the audience as they too began to ponder these questions and became award of the predicament in which their food-suppliers were actually placed. The general consensus reached, once again, is that there are no clear-cut answers. There is only advise and support which each member of the panel pledged. The workshop was part of the two-week American Economic Seminar at Millersville State College open to the business community to offer a better un derstanding of today’s dynamic economic system. Opening the program were Jerry Applegate and John Fidler, speaking on the effects animal welfarists could have on con sumers, with the emphasis being on higher food prices. “The system that welfarists are fighting is the system that gives America a very efficient food supply,” Fidler said. “Putting ourselves in the place of animals is called anthropomorphism.
