My husband has decided that he
would like to try his hand at
fishing. This is a sport which I
greatly enjoyed many years ago—
before I was married.
When I worked in an office for
eight years, the pressures of the
job were forgotten as 1 sat
leisurely fishing m the Conestoga
on a summer evening. But
somehow 1 haven’t found the tune,
even though 1 live a stone’s throw
from the nver and look at it every
hour, to sit down and fish m recent
years.
Thus, early on a Saturday
morning, I found myself being
awakened and told it was tune to
start on our trip to Raystown Lake
which is south of State College. We
had made plans to meet our son,
Jeffrey, at the Seven Points
Marina.
It was a day when the weather
threatened to ram any minute and
did on our three hour drive there.
Luckily, after we rented a boat and
were rocking away, due to the
wake of power boats, we got no
more rain.
Jeffrey has a small motor -boat.
So, we didn’t need to exert our
selves to row but were able to tour
a part of the 30-mile-long lake
easily. He was our instructor in
casting and using the appropriate
lures. It wasn’t a day for catching
fish though as even the large boats
that were out all day only caught
one or no fish at all.
Before driving home, we visited
another part of this serpentine lake
that covers 118 miles of shoreline
near the town of Aitch. Before I
saw the name on the map, I
thought my husband was saying
“H”. There is not only boating,
camping and 'swimming but also
beautiful wooded hills surrounding
the dammed-off Juniata River.
The Raystown Lake is part of a
flood control system on the
Susquehanna River Basm and was
built from 1968 to 1973 at a cost of a
$76 million.
Now that I have a fishing license
again, I’m hoping that one of these
days I can try casting my line m
the nearby Conestoga River again.
