Cl6—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 20,1981 4-H offers canoe safety READING A two-day course on canoe safety will be offered to anyone 12 years old and older by the Berks County 4-H. Participants do not have to be 4-H club mem bers, says Richard S. Kauffman, County Agent, in charge of the program. Red Cross instructors will conduct the course on June 30 and July 1 at Reading Boat Works, along the Schuylkill River, Bern Township. Instruction both days will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is limited, Kauf&nan said, and those who sign up first will be selected first. Registration Thomasville to hold petting zoo EAST BERLIN At the recent meeting of the Thomasville 4-H Club, nine members volunteered to stage a 4-H petting zoo for guests of Homewood Retirement Center, Hanover, and Barley Convalescent Home, north York, on June 15. Christine Sheaffer, Angie and Diane Lang, Bndgette Boyer, Grace Brodbeck, Robert Haskins, Nancy Eisenhart, Mike Parr, and Mike Welsh will be assisting with the animals. Club members are selling tickets for the York County 4-H Beef Bar B Q being held on June 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the York County 4-H Center, near Bair. Prices for the deep-pitted-cooked beef are adult’s platter, $4; child’s platter, $2.50; and carry-out for a sandwich, only $1.50. Tickets may be obtained from the York County Extension Office, 112 Pleasant Acres Road, York, 757-9657. Demonstrations presented were “How to Mount and Hinge Stamps,” by Jon Haskins, “Rocket Racket,” by Robert Haskins and “Spot the Hazards” by Mike Welsh. The following members of the club will attend Pennsylvania 4-H Club Congress at Pennsylvania State University, June 22 to 25. Berks elects FFA LEESPORT Berks County FFA officers were elected recently in a meeting- held at the County Agricultural Center m Leesport. The newly elected president is Richard Savage, Kutztown High School, and Wade Bernard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bernard, Twin Valley, is the new vice president. Another Twm Valley Student, Brenda Werner, is the secretary. Brenda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Werner, of Elverson. Tulpehocken High School’s William Lesher is the newly elected treasurer. The new county FFA Sentinel is Gary Hausman, Oley High School. Todd Miller, of Hamburg High, was elected county reporter. Scott Troutman, the new chaplain, is a student at Conrad Weiser High School. The new parliamentarian, Mike Mertz, attends Kutztown High School. A course will cost $1 a person. Persons may sign up at Kauff man’s office in the Berks County Agricultural Center, Bern Township. It’s open to anyone, but to be accepted, you must be able to swim for one minute without support. And you must be able to put on a lifejacket m deep water, without touching bottom, and float for five minutes. Anyone who owns a canoe may bring it along. Those who complete the course successfully will receive canoe safety certification forms from the Red Cross.
