University of New York in
CobleskiU, an agricultural and
technical college selected by Millie
because of their fme Guernsey
herd. She is not bashful in ad
mitting, “I was at the bam every
night and 1 knew all those Guern
sey cows. The Guernsey cows put
me at ease when I was 310 miles
away from home.’ ’
For Millie the opportunity to
travel was a real plus in her reign.
She attended 48 events, which
means one every eight days
throughout her year as Queen,
visited nine states and 16 airports.
To help keep a record, she wrote a
daily journal of her travels and
engagements.
“I got to travel by myself and
grow up. I got to see a lot of new
territory and meet new people. I
also learned what kind of problems
people have in other places and I
could bring home knowledge to our
own operation,” she states.
She pointed out that one sale she
attended in California all the cows
were milked before the sale which
was held m the evening. The
prospective buyers could see the
cows throughout the day and could
watch the milking process. She
added, “The prices were a little
down, but 1 think it is beneficial to
the buyer.”
Millie had the thrill of giving up
her crown at the National Guern
sey Convention in San Francisco,
something she considered a real
treat.
“Basically I talk to Guernsey
breeders or dairy farmers,” Millie
said. “I promote the Guernsey as
an efficient cow.” She also
promotes dairy products, ex
plaining, “I feel it is something
every farmer must do. No one else
can do it for them.”
Connie’s territory was a little
smaller, but she also spent a lot of
tune traveling - 2,300 miles’ worth
to be exact. She visisted 13 schools
and gave 40 presentations in ad
dition to attending functions like
Ag Progress Days, Farm Show and
Ag Expo and “lots of banquets.”
In her talk, she said, “I
promoted dairy products but I
always took a poster of the five
breeds of cows and talked about

what they eat.” She was
astonished to learn how little
children knew about dairy cows
and farming and found herself
answering questions like, “If a cow
eats green grass how does it get
white milk?”
She also responded to comments
like “I didn’t know cows don’t give
chocolate milk.” She said unless
children had taken a farm tour
many had never been on a farm,
and added, “Kids are adorable.
They were my favorite audience.”
Both girls had the fun of an
swering questions like “Are you
Miss America?” and “Are those
real diamonds in your crown?”
Connie visited a few super
markets and still has several mall
promotions and other events to do
during June Dairy Month.
Connie feels a Dairy Princess
can be valuable m reaching certain
audiences, and said the one thing
she wishes she had done more was
speaking to semor citizens groups.
“I spoke to only one and they really
enjoyed it. I was really glad I went
and I should have gone to more.
They need milk too.”
They agreed that their peers are
a hard group to persuade to drink
more milk. As Millie put it, “When
they are in a crowd they won’t
drink it.”
Millie is particularly en-
thusiastic about the benefits of
Golden Guernsey milk, saying,
“It’s more nutritional because a
glass has 19 percent more protein.
You don’t need as much to get your
daily requirements. Also more fat
puts more flavor in the milk.” She
added that it contains both more
Vitamin A and more carotene,
noting that Guernsey milk is
usually even more golden in the
springtime when the cows are on
new pasture.
She explained that there are
people who prefer Golden Guern
sey milk because it has more body
and even the two percent milk has
more flavor, according to Millie.
However, she said she does not
always talk about Golden Guern
sey milk because “You can’t
promote it if you can’t get it in the
store.” The milk from Lmdenhof
Farm is processed as Golden
