Entomologist joins
OF. Delaware staff
V,
NEWARK, Dela. Douglas W.
Tallamy, a specialist in en
tomology and applied ecology, has
joined the faculty of the depart
ment of entomology and applied
ecology at the University of
Delaware. He holds the title of
assistant professor.
Tallamy is a native of north
central New Jersey. He earned his
B.S. degree in biology at Allegheny
College. He holds an M.S. in en
tomology from Rutgers University
and a Ph.D. in entomology from
the University of Maryland.
His master’s thesis was on biting
flies. For his doctoral dissertation
he studied the maternal behavior
of a species of lacebug. He also did
a year of post-doctoral study at the
University of lowa, where he
continued his observations of
lacebug behavior.
At Delaware, TaUsuny will be
doing research on plant-insect
interactions specifically, the
ability of plants to protect them
selves from insect feeding by
releasing a defensive chemical.
“This defense mechanism can be
triggered simply by tearing a
leaf,” says Tallomay. “Response
is rather quick - within 40 minutes
of the time the leaf is damaged.

Many plants protect themselves
this way.”
This is a relatively new area of
research with important im
plications.
“If we can get plants to defend
themselves more effectively
against insect damage, certainly
we can save a lot of money on
insecticides,” he says.
The entomologist is now in the
process of writing up grant
proposals for specific research in
this area.
Tallamy will teach insect
taxonomy and also plans to
develop a new course on insect
behavior that will be introduced
next spring.
