    Energy alternatives and conservation
LANCASTER A consolation
tour of the New Holland area will
be held Tuesday, June 16. A wide
variety of conservation-related
areas will be visited, including soil
and water conservation practices,
nursery and wood alcohol
production, alternative energy
sources, stream improvement,
sanitary , landfill, - and a wood
product industry.
The first stop on the tour will be
the Miles Fry and Son Nursery.
Here hybrid poplar trees are
grown for reforestation and for
alcohol production. A pickup truck,
which runs on wood combination.

of the Year, Stauffer Homestead
wiU be visited. A registered
Charolais cattle, hog and sheep
farm, Stauffer Homestead has
implemented a complete soil and
water conservation plan which
includes cropland terraces,
waterways, and good pasture
management.
John David Martin’s dairy farm
wdl be the next stop, which
features contour strips, and a
water and sediment detention

sod waterway.
Streambank improvement-on the
Conestoga will be shown at the
next stop, where Martin Shirk had
secured a DER Encroachment
for shaping and stabilizing
his eroding streambank.
Lanchester Landfill will be the
next stop, where the operation of a
modern landfill will be explained.
The final stop will be Shady
Grove Housing Development,
where on-lot storm water
management and erosion controls
have been implemented.
The tour, organized by the
Lancaster County Conservation
District and New Holland Vo-Ag
Department, will leave the Farm
and 'Home Center at 8:30 a.m.
From there, buses will proceed to
Hmkletown where those from the
northern part of the county can
meet the bus at the back of the
Citgo Station in Hmkletown at
approximately 8:45 a.m. The buses
are scheduled to return to the
Farm and Home Center by 4 p.m.
