Imidan and Orthene will kill the
worms that are present. Repeated
sprays will be necessary in order
to give any length to the protection.
Woodlot owners may want to
secure commercial sprayers that
can make aerial application.
Gypsy Moth eradication is very
difficult, however, some protection
to private shade trees is possible
with repeat applications.
Haylage and Hay Making
Good quality forages can help
farmers generate more cash in
come with little to no additional
expense, according to Glenn Shirk,
Lancaster County Extension Dairy
Agent. And, what fanner couldn’t
use that right now! Cows produce
more milk and livestock gain more
rapidly on higher quality forages.
The need for purchased con
centrates is also generally
reduced. So if you are growing
forages, concentrate on improving
forage quality and improving
nutrient yield per acre. Now is the
time to start domg this.
Most important to quality is
stage of maturity at time of har
vest. For established stands of
alfalfa, harvest the first cutting at
the late bud stage; aftermath
growth can be cut in the late bud to
early bloom stage - about 35 to 42
days after the previous cutting and
when the basal buds begin making
new growth. To enhance the vigor
and longevity of the stand, at least
one of the cuttings should be
allowed to bloom. Similarly, the
first cutting of a new seeding of
alfalfa should be made in the early

arrival of summer droughts and
potato leafhoppers. It can also
permit you to make one additional
cutting per year.
Grasses should be cut in the boot
stage of maturity, just as the heads
are beginning to emerge.
Control Weeds in New Alfalfa
Good weed control in alfalfa is
essential for minimizing com
petition for light, moisture, and
plant nutrients. The best times to
control weeds in alfalfa stands is at
time of establishment, and m the
crop preceding alfalfa. Now is a
good time to observe new seedmgs
closely. Many of the small weeds
you see emerging can be controlled
with a post-emergence application
of 2,4-DB of dmoseb (Premerge 3),
when the weeds are quite small.
Weeds should be less than an
inch tall when 2,4-DB is applied. It
will not kill grasses, but is effective
against most broadleaf weeds
except wild radish, it is weak on
smartweed. On the other hand,
dinoseb will control wild radish as
well as most other broadleaf
weeds, but it 'will not control
grasses and late germinating
weeds. Dmoseb is applied after the
alfalfa has two trifoliate leaves,
when the weeds are very small,
and when air temperatures are
between 65*F and 85*F.
These weed killers may not be
needed even if you used a preplant
incorporated material. Be sure tq
read the label carefully and follow
instructions.
