C2B—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 23,1981 Burkhart's career (Continued from Page C 27) annual banquet and was presented a certificate of appreciation. But she claims the work is en joyable because she has a “great group of directors to work with. And Tom (Johnston), my-boss, is a great person. I really enjoy it. “Something different happens everyday. It’s very challenging. I like working with the farmers and landowners who come through my door. I try to encourage good, sound conservation practices with them,” she adds. She further explained that her work includes helping people become cooperators with the conservation district. “I assist them by explaining our programs and I get the boundaries of their farm and any special problems they may have that require Tom’s guidance,” she said. This month, Nancy’s workload increased immensely. Promotion of Soil Stewardship Week is no easy job. She had to mail 31 booklets, 1450 church bulletins, 1200 inserts and poems and 800 litanies to ministers, friends, farmers, landowners and publications. In addition, Nancy serves as treasurer foi the board of direc tors, serves on the banquet com mittee each year (and makes all the candy mints for the occasion) and helps to co-chair the tree seedling sale. The dedication to soil con servation in the Burkhart family has spread to son Douglas who is FARM - URBAN - COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS SPECIALIZING IN COMPLETE SYSTEMS FOR HOG AND DAIRY SCHULD BULK FEED BINS . Do the Burkharts take thier work seriously? Yes, says Nancy. “We recently took a trip to Florida and were impressed with all the bulldozing going on. We did notice some places where l he waterways were not properly maintained, however. We often notice these things when out driving,” she laughed.- Nancy says she feels that people in Lancaster County are very good tillers of the soil. “We talk to a lot of people in other counties and m comparison 1 feel we have a lot of fanperS who are conservation-minded. I think we would excel any other county,” she proudly states. “About 65 percent of the farmers in Lancaster County are cooperators, which is fairly good but we encourage everybody to come to us,” she adds. To become a cooperator, one need only go to the office at the Farm and Home Center, give a big, friendly “hi” to Nancy and fill out a form stating any problems you may have such as surface water control, sedimentation control, irrigation systems or cropland management.
