Beverly Eisenhart wins ‘ewe chain ’ lamb
BY JOYCE BUPP

YORK “I figured it was no use
I enter; 1 never seem to win
anything,”
Never thel'ess, 16-year-old
Beverly Eisenhart penned her
reasons for wanting to win a
purebred lamb, offered as the
prize in a'“ewe chain” contest
sponsored by the York Sheep and
Wool Producers, and hurried the
entry into the mailbox.
“I finished writing it at break
fast, and it probably still had toast
crumbs scattered over it,” she
grinned shyly, after claiming the
plump, 3-month old- purebred
Oxford female gifted to her during
the shepherds’ field day'faeld last
Saturday at the York 4-H Center.
Bev is the daughter of dairy
fanners Mr. and Mrs. Keith
Eisenhart, Davidsburg Road,
f Dover. A sheep enthusiast since
"her first year in 4-H, Bev has
raised project market lambs for
six years, including animals of the
Coniedale, Suffolk, and Dorset

annually have all been market
animals, and-Bev has had to part
with them each year at the 4-H
Roundup. Because it was her
dream 1 to own breeding stock, in
addition to tbemarket lambs, Bev
took a chance on the Wool
Producers’ offer to award a'
purebred female lamb to the best
entry in the “ewe chain” com
petition.
So toast crumbs and all, Bev’s
entry, written from the heart,
captivated the contest judges and
earned her the seed animal for her
own breeding flock.
She explained she had always
been interested in breeding sheep,
but her dad had suggested that
maybe she should wait until she
was a bit older.
“If I wait until I’m any older, it
will be too late as far as 4-H goes,”
lamented Bev in her winning
essay. She also promised that if
she were to win the ewe lamb, she '
“would give it all the attention,
care and love I give my market
lambs', if not more.”
