A scowl crossed his face and his
mouth drooped in a pout.
I had mentioned - no, I bad or
dered - that, if we were going to get
through this 4-H demonstration die
youngsters planned to prepare,
someone had better get a move on
and start practicing. That
suggestion hadn’t suited him at
that particular moment, and our
son’s long face was the result.
“Oh, don’t look so grouchy,” I
teased.
“I’m not grouchy,” he rebuted.
“I just like to keep my eyebrows
down low like this.”
His sister and 1 cracked up,
laughuig so hard that he had to
give in and gnn, too.
Instantly, the lowered eyebrows
raised to their normal, happy
location on this nine-year-old
countenance.
But, “I’m just keeping my
eyebrows low” has become
synonymous in this farm
household with being perturbed or
frustrated about something.
And I’ve noticed that certain

events can trigger me, too, to drop
these eyebrows to the low-tide
mark on my face. Like:
—the well-aged groundhog I ran
through die lawmower after we
had removed it from the yard at
least three times;
—trying to move Peggy and
Halhe, the “hardheads” of the
dairy herd, into their proper stalls
after they’ve tried out at least a
half-dozen of the wrong ones;
—cows that bawl to be let out,
and then stand at the gate a half
hour later bawling to be let back
m;
—the nail that poked up through
the right rear tire of my car;
—holes m two brand new pairs of
socks that we found as we removed
them from the plastic packaging
(and they’re going back!);
—the checkbook stub balance
which never, never, never agrees
with the balance on the bank
statement;
—dealing with people who go
through hfe with permanently
lowered eyebrows.
