JOSEPH, Mo. - A record 651 registered Angus breeders have qualified 2,526 cows and 78 bulls to be listed in the 1981 Angus Path finder Report, according to Dick Spader, executive vice president of the American Angus Association. The Association’s Pathfinder Report will be published in this month’s Angus Journal. The Pathfinder program was initiated in 1978 as a research for superior producing registered Angus cows that are enrolled on the Angus Herd Improvement Record program. Pathfinder bulls must sire at least 5 daughters that qualified as Pathfinder cows. This year 78 bulls qualified. The top bull is Rito 707 of Ideal 933 70, with 47 Pathfinder daughters. He is owned by Jorgensen Ranches, Ideal, South Dakota, and American Breeders Service Inc., DeForest, Wisconsin. They are: Schearbrook Shoshone, 29; Ankoman Dynamo, 27; Rito 707 of Ideal 836 71,27; and Blacklock McHenry 13 Y, 25. The herd with the most Path finder cows (59) is Nichols Farms, Bridgewater, lowa. In second place with 45 cows on the list is Summitcrest Farms, Summitville, Ohio. Third place honors, and the only other herd with 30 or more Pathfinder cows, was Bon View Farms, Canova, South Dakota, with 32 on the list. Specifically, for a cow to qualify ' for the Pathfinder program, she must calve the first tune within 30 days of the average for first calving m the herd that produced her. She must then maintain a regular calving interval of every 12 months, with a few minor ex ceptions. Md, strawberry season opens ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Good news comes from the strawberry fields of Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore: it’s strawberry tuneagam and the Princess Anne auction block just began selling the tasty berries, but good volume should begin on Monday. Russell Bozman, manager of the Eastern Shore Vegetable Growers Co-op, Inc., which operates the Princess Anne’s auction block, says berry supplies will be light for the first couple of days and then pick up bountifully for about two weeks and then close-out production gradually the third week. The block will operate Monday through Saturday, weather per mitting, and swing mto action as soon as the berries begin arriving m the mid morning. Weather is the key factor in strawberry production, both as to quality and quantity, particularly so with the Maryland grown berries which are unequal in flavor and texture. Maryland berries, precious as they are, do not ship and store as well as the “big competition” from the West, but as anyone knows, they can’t be beat for canning and freezing.
