ClB—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 16,1981 Oxford FFA honors top members at banquet BY SUSAN KAUFFMAN Staff Correspondent OXFORD The Oxford Chapter of the Future Fanners of America held their thirty-second annual banquet at the high school cafeteria last week to honor its members and community sup porters. President of the local chapter, Carol Carter presided over the dinner meeting, calling upon the officers to assist her throughout the evening. Giving out the awards were Scott Gold and D. Kenneth Thompson, FFA teachers at Ox ford. Inducted into the chapter as Honorary members were two community supporters. Richard Weaver, fieldman for Inter-State milk Producers, and Lawrence (Bud) Wood were recognized for their special efforts on the chap ter’s behalf. Several seniors received multiple awards capping off several years involvment in the organization. President Carol Carter received her Keystone farmer pin, first place award in the county recordbook contest and a special award for her leadership as president of the chapter. Carol served as county vice-president. Another Senior, Charles Astle, also received his Keystone Farmer pin, first place in the county recordbook contest and recognition as star chapter far mer. He placed second with his recordbook on the state level. Astle served as county student advisor this past year, He was the local chapter’s vice-president. Bonnie Lamborn, chapter secretary, was awarded her Keystone Farmer pin, first-place county recordbook and star chapter farmer award. She also received a foundation award for dairy production and a Dekalb award. Bonnie served as county chaplam this year. John Hostetter, a sophomore, was cited for placing fifth out of 208 contestants in dairy judging at Springfield, Mass. Other seniors receiving awards included Nancy Yamall, dairy production foundation award and first place county recordbook; Tom Williams, crop production, dairy production, first-place county recordbook and silver in state recordbook competition; and Deanna Willis, sales and service foundation award and first-place county recordbook. Star Chapter Farmers honored at the annual banquet of the Oxford FFA were Charles Astle and Bonnie Lamborn. Additional seniors recognized ware Valene Weaver, Keystone Farmer, public speaking and first place county recordbook; Sandy Peterson, ag production and first place county recordbook; and Robert Parry, ag production and gold state recordbook. Danny Miller, also a senior, received an ag production award and an ag mechanics award along with a gold placement in state recoro. .rink competition. David Ham, also a semor, received an ag production award and a first-place county recordbook award. Bonnie Arrowood, chapter treasurer, received a foundation award in ag processing. Two members out of school were also recognized. Alan Mason had a gold recordbook in state com petition. Charles Hayes received a bronze award in the state record book contest. Underclassmen who received foundation awards include Rod ney Weitzel, ag mechanics; Craig Dixon, shop safety; poultry production, Harvey England; sales and service, Danny Luoto; public speaking, Valerie Weaver; shop safety, Donald Foorman; Arnold Davis, ag mechanics; Bonnie Browning, ag production and soil and water management; Steve Brown, ag mechanics; Sue Dougherty, soil and water management add public speaking; and Terry King, soil and water management and public speaking. Allen Fowler received a foundation award in sales and service and Dan Osborne received one in dairy production. Alvin Miller was given a soil and water management foundation award. The creed category was a new area of competition this year. The top three winners were Andrew Hess, of Conrad Weiser; Kevin Gnest, of Twin Valley; and Ray Kamp, of Kutztown. Troy Cox of Conrad Weiser placed fourth and fifth place went to Kutztown’s Terry Wiser. Dolores McDermott, of Twin Valley, and Ronnie Burrell, of Oley, placed sixth and seventh, respectively. In the conservation category Scott Hauseman placed first with his speech “Ethanol Now.” Dave Rice’s speech “Land For Sur vival” placed second. In third place was Mark Latshaw with his speech “Soil Conservation Then and Now.” Beata Schaffer placed fourth with her speech “Watch that Leak” In the extemporaneous category the top three places went to Kutz town, including Bruce Latshaw, first; Rich Hershberger, second; and Heidi Springer, third. Ronnie Burrell, of Oley, placed fourth. Fifth and sixth places went to two Twin Valley students. Nelson Carter, Bonnie Lamborn, Bonnie Arrowood, Valerie Weaver and Deanna Willis. The FFA Chapter from Northern Lebanon placed first. The Owen J. Roberts Chapter now moves on the State Finals to be held at Penn State in June. Tom Roth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Roth, Star Route, Pott stown, placed sixth in the Public Speaking Contest. This is only the second tune that the Owen J. Roberts Parliamen tary Procedure team reached the Regional FFA Contest. This is the first tune that they have had the opportunity to go to the State Contest at Penn State.
