research in Uruguay
Bergman worked in
Uruguay for six weeks.
As part of the overall
assignment, he studied
fruit-nutrition problems
in the country, working
with scientists at the
Las Brujas research
station.
Other U.S. resear
chers m the consortium
worked m such fields as
plant pathology, en
tomology and
economics. The ex
tensive program dealt
with the activities of
extension personnel.
representatives of the
country’s ministry of
agriculture, hor
ticulturists from the
University of Mon
tevideo, and the fruit
growers of Uruguay.
The emphasis on fruit
production research is
especially important for
the four southern
provinces of Uruguay.
“The apples produced
here could be a
profitable export
commodity. The
Uruguayan growers
maintain excellent
lemon and orange
' groves, too, but the
competitive market
keeps a ceding on the
citrus growers' profits.
They also produce fine
grapes and peaches in
these provinces,”
comments Bergman.
The primary fruit
production, problem
observed by Bergman
was in soil
management. As part of
orchard maintenance,
the fruit growers in
Uruguay disked the sod
year around, damaging
; the roots of the trees and
increasing their
susceptibility to disease
infection. To reduce this
problem, he recom
mended cover crop
planting to maintain
better sod conditions m
the orchards.
Other problems for
the fruit growers are
complicated' by
geographic location and
inadequate research
programs.
“Uruguay is located
too dose to the equator
for growing tem
perature zone fruit. The
fruit trees receive onlj
about half of the
necessary cold treat
ment.
“For example, the
apple trees bloom over a
period of several weeks,
so that throughout the
season and at havest
time, such activities as
spraying and picking
are more difficult and
time consuming,”
explains Bergman.
The Penn State
researcher discovered
another problem which
stemmed from a lack of
a comprehensive leaf
analysis progcam.
Uruguayan researchers
tested for only three of
12 basic leaf elements,
therefore not obtaining
enough information to
develop a sound fer
tilizer program.
Establishment of
regular sampling times
and standard values for
plant analysis were
suggested for in
creasing uniformity m
their research and
experimentation. Ber
gman notes that the U.S.
scientists also
recommended irrigati
on improvement and
emphasized weed
control.
“Setting up an ad
visory board of growers
could also increase the
research center’s ef
fectiveness. While he
was in the country,
Bergman conducted a
week-long seminar with
the fruit extension
specialists.
“I was impressed by
their progressive at
titude. The Las Brujas
