Also, he asked those townships with ordinances to take a look to see if the land is being used as effectively as possible for either residential development or farming. Home brew for engines is no simple process UNIVERSITY PARK Making good quality “home brew” to fuel gasoline engines isn’t as easy as it may seem, agricultural engineers at Penn State are ob serving in experiments and farm observations. The trouble is that the process of making ethyl alcohol or ethanol for use in gasoline engines has been promoted in oversimplified terms, says James W. Garthe of the agricultural engineering faculty at Penn State. It looks easy at first to convert plant wastes from farms and gardens into ethanol, Garthe and associates have noticed. “Too many - people believe they can make ethanol at home, then simply mix it with gasoline to form gasohol a blend of 90 percent unleaded gasoline and 10 percent water-free ethanol. This does not always work,” Garthe commented. k Usually, homemade Ethanol contains too much water to make gasohol. Depending on the temperature of the gasoline and its makeup, very small traces of water found in any homemade ethanol will cause what is called “phase separation.” “Where small amounts of water occur, as in most homemade ethanol, alcohol and water , both separate from gasoline, creating unsteady engine, operation of stalling. Even less than one percent water may create phase separation.” Garthe stated. f The process of fer 'menting crops and distilling ethanol is similar to that used in making alcoholic beverages. Garthe says a federal permit is required to make homemade ethanol. In Pennsylvania and some other states, a state permit is also needed. Garthe and Kermit Q. Stephenson have carried out a number of experiments using ethanol in gasoline engines at Penn State. The research shows that 200 proof ethanol can be used as fuel only if the engine is modified to accept ethanol. For example, car buretor jets need to be enlarged to allow for an increased rate or fuel »flow, since straight £ ithanol must be burned in larger quantities than gasoline to equal the performance of Ag zoning Tom Johnston, of the Con servation District staff, reviewed the mapping of the various municipalities that had been done. He offered a few suggestions in any ag zoning efforts. First, use natural boundaries, as roads and streams. Always, look at what’s next door in the neighboring municipality. Make sure that farmers are involved in the efforts. And promote soil and water con servation measures. Also, adequate vaporization of ethanol is needed at the car buretor. Then too, a lubricant such as castor oil should be added to the fuel to prevent engine damage. And fuel systems need to be changed to types resisting the acid properties of ethanol.
