Come to the Quilt Show
day,May 3, noon to 6 p.m. The
event will be staged in the Society
building, 43 South Chestnut Street,
Boyertown.
The show which features over
100 quilts, has attracted hundreds
of visitors. Some come to see the
nineteenth century patchwork and
applique examples. Active quitters
come to see these and other
modern, newly-created designs.
For beginners, society members
will be busy stitching and happy to
give advice to interested
onlookers.
The quilts, old and new, are on
loan from private individuals and,
m most cases, have not been seen
by the public prior to this show
As a special attraction, single
and double-woven, and Jacquard
coverlets will be on display. The
examples on view will be products
of the nineteenth century, most of
which were created by
southeastern Pennsylvania
craftsmen.
In the 1800’s, coverlets were

Jacquard coverlets were often
embellished with the weaver’s
name, the recipient’s name, and
the-year it was woven.
Artifacts pertaining to weaving
will be on display, and Mrs. Ada
Stauffer, a local weaver, will be
demonstrating the basics of the
craft on a small loom.
Also on exhibit will be a quilt just
recently completed by Society
members The design, “Wishing
Well,” is an unusual variation of
the traditional nine patch, utilizing
only two different fabrics. The
effect of the design >s an intricate
maize, which embodies a
somewhat Oriental feeling. Mrs
Rosie Mutter, quilt show chair
man, selected the design, and
society quilters helped to sew the
top and then quilted it.
Open to the public, there is a
donation of $l.OO for adults,
children under 16 admitted free if
accompanied by an adult.
Last year’s show attracted
people from all corners of
southeastern Pennsylvania and
several adjoining states.
