D34—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 18,1981 Be prepared for rootworm season LANCASTER - Fanners planning to plant second or third year corn should definitely consider using a soil insecticide, recommends Gary Beland, research en tomologist for Funk Seeds International. Rootworm-a problem xor com farmers across the country-will cause trouble again this season, possibly m even greater force than last year, Beland says. “Based on adult rootworm beetle counts in the central Corn Belt last season, we’re ex pecting an increase in larvae populations for 1981,” he adds. For individual far mers, predictive scouting of beetle populations in late summer could have indicated the need for soil insecticides. Beland advises far mers who counted an average of at least one beetle per plant between July and September, or those who don’t know what tneir count was and plan to plant second or third year corn, to use a soil insecticide Also, he says, if there were more than 4000 volunteer corn plants in a soybean field last year, and a farmer plans to plant com in the field this year, in secticide application should be considered. That number of volunteer com plants was sufficient to attract egg-laying beetles in in August and result in enough larvae this year to damage corn “Organophosphates such as Amaze, Counter, Dyfonate, Lorsban, Mocap, and Thiraet offer a measure of control m continuous com,” Beland says. Farmers having less than satisfactory control with the car bamate insecticide, Furadan, should con sider switching to an organophosphate in secticide Beland says control of rootworm in the larval state is easiest, although adult beetle control can be achieved with a number of in secticides Crop rotations, which kill rootworm larvae by starvation, are still the best defense against rootworm GIGANTIC SELECTION In Lancaster Farming's CLASSIFIEDS “A com-bean rotation species has a wide is good in areas where range of hosts ” northern and western in addition, plowing rootworms exist Small or discing may help grams works too,” says lower larval populations Beland. by damaging eggs in the “Rotations aren’t as Soll > or in case ° f effective in areas of “fusm rootworm, by heavy southern com killmg weeds that serve rootworm infestations, as a food source, Beland however, because that say B Later in the season.
