Housing
continues
to gobble
rural land
WASHINGTON, D.C.
More than 40 percent
of the nation’s housing
constructed in 1970’s
was built on rural land,
some of it highly
productive farmland, a
U.S. Department of
Agriculture official said
Tuesday.
Norman A. Berg,
chief of USDA’s Soil
Conservation Service,
said information
gathered for the
recently completed
National Agricultural
Lands Study and in
recent agency in
ventories reveals that
rual housing is joined
with expanduid cities as
a competitor for far
mland.
USDA earned out the
study jointly with the
Council on En
vironmental Quality
and other agencies.
“Lots for new
residences for non
farming families
ranging from five to 10
acres are common in
rural areas where
central sewer and water
services are not
available,” said Berg.
“These residential
‘farmlets’ are taking an
increasing amount of
agricultural land out of
production.”
The nation’s
agricultural land is
converted
nonagncultural uses at
the rate of more than
two million acres a
year, according to the
agency head.
About a third of the
converted acres are
cropland.
