D32—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 11,1981 LANCASTER The Lancaster County Conservation District is making available a scholarship to an elementary or secondary teacher in Lancaster County to attend Science Education 456, a three credit course entitled “Teaching of conservation of Natural Resources in the Schools ” Held at Penn state from June 15 to July 3, 1981, the program in- Efficient fuel use LANCASTER - Ris ing energy costs threaten to take an even larger portion of your profits this year. In some farming acres, for example, diesel prices have jumped 205 per cent during the past two years To help stretch fuel supplies and in turn hold down production costs, Massey-Ferguson offers this fuel-savings plan for tractor operation. 1. Remember the engine consumes the fuel, so keep it in top condition at all times. 2. Keep air filters clean. A clean air filter guarantees that the air/fuel mixture is burn ed in the right propor tion, providing maximum efficiency and economy. 3. With a diesel engine, make sure injec tors and injection pumps are kept in perfect working order Contact the local dealer if there is any doubt about their condition 4. Store and handle fuel' so it stays clean Dnjty fuel causes blockages and waste. 5. Select the gear that gives the desired travel speed at the most economical engine speed. Operate the engine at an near as possible to rated engine speed. 6. Use tractor weights and hydraulics to properly control wheel slippage. 7. Check and main tain accurate tire pressure. High pressure reduces tire traction and increases wheel slippage. Low pressure can increase rolling resistance; this adds to the amount of power - and fuel - required for operation 8. Dragging brakes can also rob fuel. Make necessary adjustments. And don’t let the engine idel unnecessarily. 9. Match implement size to tractor power. Too small an implement means extra, un necessary trips over the field And if a piece of equipment is too large, it’s overloading the tractor. 10. Take measures to ensure that all im plements pull as easily as possible. Get the line of draft right. Keep plow shares sharpened Make correct implement ad justments when necessary. And follow a “thinking” approach to implement operation. Soil District offers teaching grant eludes soil, water, forests, wildlife and mineral conservation. Anyone interested should write to the Lancaster County Con servation District, Room 6, Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, PA 17601, in dicating their background, the use of conservation education into their classroom in the past and future plans to include en vironmental education in their school and community. The scholarship will pay for tuition, but will not cover room and REAL ESTATE AUCTION “Ervin Helmer, individually and as Surviving Partner of Donald Helmer, and Donald Helmer Estate, by James Helmer, Executor.” THURSDAY, APRIL 16,1981 at 10-30 AM on Rt. 39, 3 mi. from Castile, 3 mi. from Pike, in the town of Lamont, NY.
