The Editor
Dear editor
As a subscriber to your paper, 1
want you to know that I certainly
enjoy it, especially this tune of the
year when I enjoy readmg the
auction sale advertisements.
However, I am deeply concerned
about the accuracy of some of the
ads
On Saturday, April 4, 1981 I
drove 135 miles one way to attend a
sale that had a certain motor
vehicle advertised, only to find
that it had been sold prior to the
sale date. I think you probably
know how I felt about that!
I think you should make it clear
to your advertisers that they will
be responsible for false or
misleading ads, ana require that
all advertisements for sales
contain the name and telephone
number ot a person who can be
contacted for accurate in
formation.
A fine example of the way an ad
ought to be done is the Jason’s
Leather Craft ad on page ElO of
your March 21,1981 issue

A week or so ago someone put on
my deks (I don’t know who) the
January 3rd issue of Lancaster
Farming, and had written in big,
red pencil, ‘ See page A-10” To say
I was amazed is putting it mildly.
First, let me state, I was bom
and raised on a farm near Ephrata
so I believe I know what it’s all
about.

referred to above entitled “Enough
is Enough” contains statements
that contradict each other. The
article begins by indicating the
tune has come for the Com
monwealth to stop wasting money
acquiring land and start investing
funds in saving it. The Penn
sylvania Game Commission’s
objectives are the acquisition of
lands and investment of funds to
save land for many purposes for
future generations. We do not
consider this a “waste”, as alluded
tom your article.
Further, m the article you have
stated, “for starters, the wrong
land is being saved. There is no big
rush of developers to develop
rocky hillsides, backwoods timber
stands or hilly brush. ’ ’
May I suggest you go to the
Poconos, Bedford or Somerset
Counties, or even to the nor
thcentral part of the state and see
development upon development in
the areas you have outlined. We
feel there is an obvious need to
protect these areas at this time. If
the Game Commission were to
take a negative attitude, there

most poisonous plants are un
palatable, and cattle will consume
them only when hungry.
To Control Fowl Mites
The Northern fowl mite has been
particularly troublesome m many
of our poultry flocks. The mite
problems began during the winter
and continues in many flocks. It is
a well recognized fact that the
Northern fowl mite can be very
difficult to control because it
spends its life cycle on the host,
and has the ability to develop
resistance to miticides. However,
in many cases, mite control is not
achieved because of the way that
the miticide is appbed. For

would be no lands for outdoor
recreational activities available
for future generation.
You alluded to using money that
is being utilized for acquisition of
Game Lands as incentive
payments for farmers to keep land
in agriculture. Again, may I call
your attention to the several
statutes that have been enacted in
order to provide tax incentives to
the agricultural community. In
spite of these statues, land is still
being taken out of production for
development, industry, etc.
This will continue regardless of
what incentives are available due
to the fact that the larger segment
of our population and industry is
located within these regions, and
developers pay whatever price the
market dictates. A prune example
is the displacement of the Amish
from Lancaster County.
The Game Commission’s
acquisition program is predicated
on the basis of a willing seller to a
willing buyer on an open com
petitive market, and as the land
base for outdoor recreational uses
(Turn to Page A 39)
The Time
example, when a fine spray nust is
used, the total volume of miticide
per bird is not sufficient to control
the mites A corse spray or a
“pencil” stream will put more
miticide on the bird with better
penetration, thus better control.
Another pomt for better control is
to add a small amount (1
tablespoon per 3 gallons) of
detergent to the spray as a feather
wetting agent It will give better
penetration and retention of the
miticide. Some of the miticides
currently approved for use on
layers are Co-Ral, Rabon and
Sevm. Be sure to follow label
recommendations and precautions
when using any pesticide.
