LITITZ The The cafeteria of
the Penn Manor High School was
packed Thursday night, March 12,
as 463 people gathered for the FFA
Chapter's annual banquet
Twenty FFA members already
graduated from high school joined
in the festivities to make the
number of future farmers a
wopping 160.
Ceremonies for the evening
included installation of new of
ficers and recognition of FFA
members and parents.
Forty-two FFA members were
awarded the Greenhand award.
Mellisn Greider, awarded the FFA
Creed Award, recited the creed
and Jeffrey Barley was named
Star Greenhand
Scott Shertzer was named Star
Chapter Farmer above 38 other
members who received the
chapter farmer degree.
A special award, the David
Dombach Memorial Award went to
Gerald Frey, Master of
Ceremonies, for his work in the
FFA Chapter
Sixteen members were awarded
Red Rose Degrees, with Gerald
European food buyers discover Pennsylvania products
HARRISBURG - Western
European food buyers recently
took a taste of Pennsylvania
agriculture when six Pennsylvania
food firms exhibited their products
at a buying mission in New York
City
State Agriculture Secretary
Penrose Hallowell said the six
firms discussed food trade
possibilities with 37 food buyers
from 15 European nations at the
show, sponsored by the Eastern
United States Agricultural and
Food Export Council
Western Europe is a major part
of the United States’ agricultural
export market
“We annually export more than
$9 billion in food and agriculture
products to Western Europe,”
Hallowell said, “while importing
only $1.7 billion in return
Agricultural trade with Western
Europe provides us with a $7 3
billion favorable trade balance, a
fact that is very important to the

in the past two years. Hallowell
said efforts by the Agriculture
Department to help Pennsylvania
firms enter this expanding market

porters taking part in the food
show
According to John W Scott, the
Department’s Chief of the Division
of Marketing Services, the com
panies were “well pleased with the
good contacts made during the
show ”
He said, “Several firms had
confirmed sales for the coming
year, while all were confident that
contacts made this year could pay
off in additional sales in the
future ”

Hall of Batavia, N Y has been
named Executive Vice President
and General Manager of Da.*ylea,
according to an announcement
Tuesday from Dairylea Chief
Executive Officer Edgar T. Mertz.
Hall will assume responsibility
for all of Dairylea’s milk-based
operations, reporting directly to

operations, and manufacturing

organized to promote and expand

Hallowell said other Penn
sylvania firms interested in the
export market should consider
attending the fifth Pennsylvania
operations, Mertz explained.
Hall moves to the Dairyiea
executive role from his position as
general manager of O-At-Ka, a
major milk manufacturing and
marketing organization at
Batavia, N.Y which is owned by
the Dairyiea, Niagara, and Up
state Milk Co-operatives.
He served previously as plant
superintendent for Ocean Spray,
the world’s largest cranberry
producers cooperative, and in
