apple recipe contest
HARRISBURG Mrs. George
Tombler Jr., of Easton took top
honors in the Pennsylvania Apple
Recipe Contest with her recipe
“Three Apple Mold Salad,” ac
cording to State Agriculture
Secretary Penrose Hallowell.
Ten finalists, chosen from over
220 entries from across the state,
traveled to Hershey to compete in
the contest, sponsored by the Penn
sylvania Apple Marketing Board,
in cooperation with the’ state
Department of Agriculture.
Hallowell said, “Mrs Tombler’s
recipe, which won her the $2OO first
prize, was judged best overall for
east of preparation, economy, ap
peal, taste and appearance.”
Judges for the contest were
William Trautman, assistant food
and beverage manager for the
Hershey Convention Center, Mar
sha Hadjuk, director of standards
for Dutch Pantry restaurants; and
Betty Rode, home economist, Pen
nsylvania Department of
Agriculture
Other winners were Joan R.
Brumgard of Hanover, York Coun
ty, who received $l5O for her se
cond place entry, “Barbecued
Chicken ” Another York County

The six remaining finalists were
named runners-up in the contest
and received $5O each. They were

Pie;” and Margaret Albert of
Latrobe, making, “Christmas
Fruitcake.”
The ten winning recipes, in
which apple cider, apple juice or
applesauce must be an ingredient,
will be complied and published in a
booklet to be distributed
throughout the state this fall dur
ing the next apple harvest
