How
on
MAYTOWN - une
hundred eggs were
sampled each month in
June and July 1980 from
SCW Leghorn layers in
cages being fed from an
outgoing feed line, these
were compared to 200
eggs gathered from
birds on an incoming
feed line
An average of eight
percent cracked eggs
were produced on
outgoing as well as
incoming feed lines, so
there were no dif
ferences in the total
average number of
cracked eggs produced
whether birds were
eating fresh, home
mixed feed from the bin
or feed that had
traveled several hun
dred feet past several
thousand birds eating at
it
Percent cracked eggs
between samples had no
variation between
samples on the outgoing
feed lines but varied
eight percent (four to 12
percent) between
monthly samples on the
return feed line
Also specific gravity
of eggs produced was
only slightly different
with three percent more
eggs reaching 1 080
specific gravity on the
outbound feed chain
production area.
Variation between
samples was zero on the
outgoing feel line while
there was 14 percent
variation in specific
gravity of eggs between
monthly samples on the
return feed line
Haugh units were
measured by the egg
break out method on all
eggs and found to have
little variation in AA
quality eggs between
samples on each line,
however, only 77 per
cent eggs were
produced on outgoing
lines while an average
of 86 percent AA eggs
were produced by birds
on return lines
An average of eight
percent blood spots
were produced on
outgoing feed while only
four percent bloods
were produced on
return feed lines.
An average of 23
percent of all 200 eggs
sampled were dirty on
the return line while
only 17 percent of the 200
eggs were dirty on the
outgoing line. Tran
slucent shelled varied
only one percent bet
ween the outgomg (16
percent translucent
shells on eggs) and the
return feed line (15
percent translucent
shells on eggs).
Average B shells and
body checks ran seven
percent of all eggs on
the outgomg line while
only six percent on the
return line.
In summary when
comparing egg from *
birds on outbound
feedlmes, they lead in
percent bloods in eggs,
while birds on return
feed lines lead in per
cent dirty and percent
AA interior quality
eggs. No difference was
observed in percent
cracked eggs or B shells
on eggs from birds fed
