Grange asks protection
for U.S. mushrooms
HARRISBURG - The Penn
sylvania State Grange has recently
taken action on the problem of
canned mushroom imports
disrupting the American market
“It’s tune to protect American
mushroom producers from unfair
foreign competition,’’ announced
Charles E Wismer, Jr, state
Grange Master.
Approximately 53 percent of
canned mushrooms purchased by
U S. consumers last year were
imported, according to a study
conducted by the International
Trade Commission. This figure has
been rising steadily for the past
decade, and is expected to climb
even further in 1981.
In a recent letter to US
Congressmen, Wismer asked for
legislation setting unport quotas at
48 million pounds per year in the
aggregate, and the continuation of
a tariff on imports plus an ad
valorem tax (in proportion to their
invoiced value)
These monies, Wismer said,
should be returned in part to the
mushroom industry and used for
