ROBERT HOFFMAN 201-859-0767 Arthur Hanna Auctioneer Bloomsburg, N J 201-995-7862 muster Fanning, Saturday, February 28,1981—£29 month period m which no new swine were permitted in the country. Presently, sentinel pigs have been placed on observation farms in the country. These disease-free, suscep tible pigs will determine if the African swine fever virus has been completely eliminated. If the sentinel pigs remain healthy, a program of restocking the country with ad ditional healthy pigs will begin. It is believed that the virus entered the country in 1978 through infected pork scraps in garbage from an in ternational airline flight. The garbage was fed to swine, and pigs were sold from this herd before it was known they had been infected with the highly con tagious viral disease. Soon, pigs began dying throughout the entire countryside. After setting up an emergency system to combat the disease, the country began carrying on an all-out battle to eliminate it. The brigades were the front line troops. The initial days of finding and slaughtering pigs were gruelling, but straight forward. The brigades could always be sure there were pigs to be found But when they began their follow-up searches, it was a dif ferent story. Rural families or “cam pesmos” afraid of losing their pigs their “piggy banks” or pets would hide their hogs wherever possible. One brigade repor tedly entered a cam pesmo’s yard and spoke to family members over the blasting noises of a radio playing inside the house. The family flatly denied any knowledge or sighting of pigs, when suddently through the suddenly through the unmistakeable “oink.” In the house they found a large sow tied up and lying under the bedsheets! The surveillance brigades also received leads from the cam pesmos whose pigs had already been taken These people knew that the longer pigs were hidden, the longer it would be until everyone could have new pigs Hiding pigs would only cause delays in declaring the area free of disease.
