    E2B—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 28,1981
LIMA With spring
cleaning well underway
home owners will soon
be turning to
examination of or
namental trees, shrubs,
and home lawns. “Small
mounds of dirt and
tunnels running through
lawns are often caused
by ground mole ac
tivity,” says James
McKeehen, Delaware
Co. ag. agent.
The presence of moles
is indicated by ndges or
conspicuous mounds of
earth in lawns and
gardens. The ridges,
where the soil or soil
crust is raised, indicate
the animals are actively
searching for a food
source close to the
surface of the lawn.
The underground
galleries made by the
mole are often invaded
by various species of
mice. As a result of this
invasion, the mole is
blamed for the injury to
seeds, grams, tubers,
and roots of cultivated
plants that are damaged
by these intruding
animals.
A stable diet for
ground moles consists of
earthworms, white
grubs; and other soil
animals, although some
vegetable matter is
occasionally eaten
Thus, if we combine the
damage from these two
problems, white grubs
and ground moles, our
lawns may look very
shabby by the approach
of early summer.
Deprive the mole of
tkeir food supply and
they will frequently
move to another area
The ground mole is a
potential indicator of
grub infestation so
McKeehen advises that
you pull out your garden
spade and take 10-15
square foot samples to
determine if you do
have grub infestation
You should remember
that most of the damage
you see now in the
spring was done last
fall, second, the spring
grub is less susceptible
to insecticides, third,
some spring grubs may
already be burrowed m
the soil and fourth,
current controls are
short residue com
pounds which must be
applied when the grubs
are feeding near the
surface root zone.
There are 4 spring or
summer alternatives.
A homeowner may
wait until mid-Aug to
sample for the small
grubs and then put on an
approved control
measure according to
label directions
A second alternative
is to use a Japanese
beetle trap baited with
an aromatic lure The
lure attracts flying,
adult Japanese beetles
into the traps from
which they cannot
escape.
A homeowner may
decide to apply an
application of milky
spore disease which is a
Starve moles by killing
bacterial control
measure. This product
should be applied ac
cording to label
directions. However,
