Dewey M Caron, professor of
entomology and apiary specialist
at the University of Maryland,
performed pollen-trapping field
trials in 1978 while on sabbatical
leave at the University of Arizona
Caron described the pollen
trapping process as fairly simple
A wire mesh barrier, or gate is
set up at the hive enti ance As the
es pass 'hi oiitd to 40 percent
or the pollen on then itgs is
scraped off
He found trapping does lead to
an increase in pollen-collecting
activity among honey bees
After an initial period of con
fusion, most colonies will readily
adapt to a pollen trap,' Caron

body protein in the bees, but
trapping was found to reduce both
brood and adult population in the
hive after one month After a
second month had passed,
however, the reduction in brood
reanng was no longer found to be
statistically significant
The Arizona field study involved
36 hives, with nine in each of the
following treatment groups
—control hives, where bees were
neither trapped nor fed pollen,
—pollen trapped but not fed to
the bees,
—pollen fed but not trapped, and
—pollen both fed and trapped.
Observation of the last group led
Caron to conclude the positive
effect of feeding compensated for
the negative effect of the trap
Thus, beekeepers wishing to trap
pollen while maintaining a high
brood population should consider a

combination of feeding and
trapping
When the bees’ sources of pollen
are restricted, due either to
seasonal change or vegetative
constraints of the hive location,
pollen feeding is an especially good
idea, Caron comments Single
source pollen is often
nutritionally inadequate, leaving
bees susceptible to diseases.
Supplemental feeding of a variety
of pollens alleviates this problem.
Eaily-season feeding of honey
bees may be desirable but not
necessary, Caron adds A strong
colony in the spring is particularly
beneficial to fruit tree pollination
and greater honey production.

beekeeping is available from
