Frederick County to mark
FREDERICK, Md - Maryland
Agriculture - Voice of the Land,
will be celebrated in Frederick
County at the Fredencktowne Mall
beginning on March 2 to 7.
Activities have been planned for
each night, beginning at 7 30 p m
in front of the J.C. Penney Store
On Monday night, March 2, the
Frederick County 4-H Cow Gals
and Guys wlI have food demon
strations and have a program on
dairy products.
On Tuesday night, March 3, the
Frederick County Sheepbreeders
Association will be “Telling the
Wool Story” from start to finish.
Dover Young Farmers
Association and have taken part in
numerous commodity promotions
Lome has been instrumental in
helping the York College obtain a
grant through their work with 20
area farms Through that
program, participating farmers
could obtain information on toxin
levels found in the forages they
grew and used in livestock rations
The Detters have four children
and recently hosted an American
Field Service exchange from
Japan while she attended Dover
High School for a year. Lome is
also a gospel singer and heads up
the Hosanna Gospel Group
For the second year, the Dover
Young Farmers selected an out
standing local supporter of
agriculture programs as their
chapter Honorary Young Farmer
Named the 1981 winner of that
award was William Sprenkle,
owner of Spangler and Sprenkle,
Inc , a West York feed, grain, and
coal dealer

Karen Kemp, and Thomas Johnson

Two entrants, Lester Baney,
Bull Road, and Lester Lucken
baugh, Spring Grove, finished in a
field corn yield tie, both harvesting
160-bushels per acre on their trial
plots
The champion hay sample
exhibited at the Crop Show was
entered by Joe Stump, York RIO
Wayne Myers, Salem Church
Road, Dover, topped the silage
classes and the ear corn category

Poultry Judging Contest will be
held at the Mall, beginning at 3 00
p.m FFA members from
Frederick County will be judging
various grades of eggs, chickens,
and turkeys
Thursday night will feature
Dairy Night Contestants will be
trying their .'■and at milking goats
Also there will be a “Squirts for
Squirts” program where small
children and adults can try their
hand at milking cows
There will also be a petting zoo,
for children which will feature the
six dairy breeds of calves There
will also be a Simmental cow and
calf on display Children will have
a chance to touch these animals
On Friday evening, there will be
a cross cut sawing contest Some of
the contestants include Barry
Lucey and Paul Spurrier (Farm
Bureau), Rodman Myers,
(Grange), and Gordon Anderson
(School Board), Lance Ghsan and
Mark Stevens (Sire Power), Clyde
Crum and Joe Free (Fair Board)
and David Miller and Larry Riggs

Frederick County Extension
Homemakers, in conjunction with
the Frederick County 4-H Clubs
will be having a mannequin
modeling demonstration
throughout the day
On Saturday evening, a Mini
Tractor Race will be held. Some of
the contestants include David
Burner (Frederick County Young
Farmers), Ivan Barnesley (Heart
of Maryland Tractor Pullers),
Terry Castle (Vernon Stump
Company); Marvin Glass, (H B
Duvall Company); Benny Ahalt
(Central Maryland Antique
Tractor Pullers), James Har
baugh (Gladhill Tractor Mart),
Bobby Bare (Reich’s Ford Truck
and Tractor)
Also on Saturday evening, there
will be a bale throwing contest

agricultural businesses will have
displays also during that week.
Some of the exhibits include a bee
and honey exhibit, 4-H and Dairy
exhibits; Farm Safety, Antique
Tractor exhibits, Soil Conservation
Service and machinery displays
There will also be exhibits from the
University of Maryland,
promoting statewide agriculture
programs and organizations
