Dover Young Farmers celebrate state awards

DOVER Although it had
originally been planned as the
annual meeting and banquet,
Dover Young Farmers’ dinner
gathering last Friday evening
instead was more of a joyous
victory celebration.
The celebration was in honor of
the chapter’s winning of three top
awards earlier in the week at the
Pennsylvnaia Young Farmers
Association’s state convention at
Hershey.
The Dover group was named the
Outstanding Chapter and their
advisor, William Fleet, received
the Outstanding Advisor Award
Members Lome and Ailean
Better were honored as the Out
standing Community Service
award recipients

“This has been an amazing
year,” he said, commending the
Young Farmers organization and
its officers. He recalled that during
his first three months in the vo-ag
position, he sometimes felt he
wouldn’t last for six months, due to
community disinterest and lack of
participation in the programs
“But I didn’t have to do a thing
this year; the members took hold
and have been so much help,” he
praised
Originally from a small general
family farm in Washington
County, Fleet came to the Dover
vo-ag department in 1978 Just
graduated from Penn State, he
came with a Masters degree in
agronomy after undergraduate
studies in agriculture science
In addition to advising the Young
Farmers, Fleet teaches several vo
ag classes daily, mostly up
perclassmen, in the study areas of
farm management, agronomy,

dairy, and supervises the student
work-study program
In his report, Fleet noted that he
had traveled over 10,000 miles in
visitations and related meetings,
and made nearly 500 individual
farm stops tied to the Young
Farmer and FFA programs.
County Conservation Service
board and chairs the group’s
“Program 208,” a survey of far
mlands m the basins of two major
county streams, the Conewago and
the Codorus
He’s also a legislative committee
member for the York County
Farmers Association and holds
membership in the agronomy, soil
and crop societies of America
Under Fleet’s leadership, Dover
Young Farmers hold a senes of
regular classroom sessions, plus
special educational events
President is Wayne Myers, Salem
Church Road, Dover, who ac
cepted fhe state award on behalf of
the chapter
From an initial dozen or two
entries from class members, their
annual Crops Show now draws
farmers from across the county,
who bring samples of a variety of
forages and grains, plus a roomful
of commercial representatives
who set up exhibits
Another popular event which
draws countywide interest is their
Field Day, spotlighting com
parative field plots on tillage,
herbicide and pesticide use, seed
varieties, equipment demon
strations and commercial
exhibitors
Lome and Ailean Detter, the
Outstanding Community Service
winners, operate a 76-acre farm,
with 40 head of beef cattle, on Old
Carlisle Road, Dover
Lome is also sales and service
manager for Spangler and
Sprenkle, Inc., and a supervisor
for Dover Township. Ailean, an
artist, is secretary for the York
County Farmers’ Association and
township democratic com
mitteewoman
