LANCASTER To help farmers
become better acquainted with the
commodities market and how to
use it, a free seminar was held this
week in the offices of Trade Tech
Management, Inc., Lancaster.
David Sauder, commodities
advisor, told the assembled group
of farmers that, like every other
tool a farmer has at his command,
hedging in the commodities
market can work both for and
against you.
“You need to respect the tools
you use on the farm,” Sauder said
"A tractor can plow your field Or
it can injure you permanently You
don’t stop using tractors just
because they can injure you In the

the account to lock in a selling
price for cattle, hogs, or grains
that give you a profit ”
A motion picture illustrated how
farmers can use hedging so that if
the cash price goes down, the
commodities contract locks in your
profit In addition, if the cash price
goes up, you may lose in the
commodities contract But that
loss will be regamed in the cash
market so you still can have the
profit you built into your plan when
you purchased cattle or hogs.
The seminar was one of a series
of meetings planned over the next
several months to help farmers
with the management of their cash
flow through the proper use of
commodities contracts
