Coble, Bomberger top 5-Acre Com Clubs
HERS HEY The winners of the
5-Acre Com Club for Dauphin and
Lebanon Counties were announced
Thursday during the Cora and
Soybean Day, held here at
Founders Hall.
The top grower in Dauphin
County was David Coble, R 1
Hershey with his 136.5 bushel per
acre yield of ear com. Coble
planted Pioneer Brand 3382 at the
rate of 22,626 plants per acre with
an 8 7 inch spacing His three-year
average was 1351 bushels per
acre
Cyrus Bomberger, R 5 Lebanon,
received a blue ribbon for his
winning 165.7 bushels per acre of
shelled Pioneer Brand 3382. He
planted at a rate of 21,944 plants
per acre with 9 5 inch spacing
Bomberger’s three year average
was 148 bushels per acre.
These top yields were attained
despite the drought conditions that
plagued the two counties last
summer
Milton Hershey School Farm
came in second in Dauphin County
with a 126 1 bushels per acre yield
on Pioneer Brand 3184 shelled com
for 1980. However, they did take a
blue ribbon for their three-year
average of 162 7 bushels per acre.
