DENVER, Colo. Sixty-two
head of Shorthorn cattle were in
the largest and strongest pen
competition to be held at the
National Western Livestock Show
in recent years.
J.W. Brune, Ottawa, Ks., judge
for the classes, made use of the
performance weights of each pen
gathered two days before the show.
The grand champion pen of five
bulls was exhibited by Berg’s
Shorthorns, Osage, la., for the
second consecutive year. Their pen
had an average age of 635 days,
and weighed an average of 1565
pounds with a 2 46 pound weight
per day of age.
The reserve grand champion pen
of five was shown by another
repeat pen exhibitor, Mohns Polled
Elanco to sponsor
cattle seminar

Lancaster County Adult Farmer
Program will sponsor a Beef Cattle
Management Meeting on Wed
nesday, February 11,1981, at 7:30
p.m. at the Union Grove School.
Speaker for the meeting will be
Les Burdette, extension livestock
specialist from Penn State.
Burdette is quite familiar to
Lancaster County beef producers,
having made many presentations
at Cattle Feeder Days at the Farm
and Home Center.
The major topic of discussion
will be feeding steers for market
economically and will include feed
requirements, balancing a ration,
use of non-protein nitrogen, im
planting, and use of feed additives.

With an average weight of 1580
pounds, the bulls had an average
age of 668 days for a 2.37 pound
WDA.

Oh., 1 third; Robert Miller, Ford
ville, N.D., fourth; and F.A.
Heckendorf, Jr., & Family, Castle
Rock, Co., 1 fifth.
The pen-of-three show had en
tries in both the calf and the
yearling divisions The R Lee
Johnson Family captured the
champion banner on their first
place yearling bulls. They weighed
in at 1665 pounds at an average of
646 days for a 2.58 pound WDA.
The reserve grand champion
of management will be discussed
Of special interest will be a
demonstration of a programmable
calculator to illustrate the
potential use of this “management
tool” in making feeding and
marketing decisions
