FARM SHOW - Beth
Holtzinger, a junior at Red
Lion High School, York
County, began her second
year reign as the Pa
Berkshire queen at this
year’s Farm Show.
Beth, who described
herself as “prissy when I
was little”, started in the
Berkshire hog business after
she won the FFA chapter gilt
in 1979 for her essay on care
of hogs and how to build up a
herd Since then she has bred
her prize gilt to a registered
Berkshire boar and has
given the pick-of-the-htter to
the 1980 contest winner.
Living on her parent’s 250
acre farm, Beth explained
she has learned much about
what it takes to be successful
in farming.
“A farmer is someone
who’s outstanding in their
field I feel a woman can be
as successful in farming as a
man It’s a hard business to
be in anyone who can
make it is successful,” she
said.
Under the guidance of her
parents, Lester and Edna
Holtzmger, Beth has learned
the responsibility and work
it takes to make a diversified
operation successful She
said she helps out in raising
the farm’s potato and tomato
crops, and lends her hand m

don’t have to worry about
setting up a pig ”
Beth recalled when she
made her decision to enter
the vo-ag curriculum in 9th
grade, her parents, four
brothers and three sisters
said she’d never make it.
“That made me even more
determined to be a suc

earned her Green Hand
degree, Star Green Hand,
Chapter Farmer, and Star

Beth has also earned the
respect of her peers and was
voted County FFA president
this year, and served as

Going to college to study
agriculture education is
another goal in Beth’s future
plans And she said she
hopes someday to live out
West and have her own
farm
Her plans also will include
her finance, Greg Innerst of
Red Lion, a fellow FFA’er.
With all her activities, the
Berkshire Queen said she
doesn’t have much time for
other interests, although she
enjoys latch hooking rugs
and reading.
“Someday, Greg and I
would like to have the best
Berkshire herd in the hog
industry,” Beth smiles

Charles Brader,
marketing official with
AMS, said the firm had the
opportunity to answer the
charges, but did not USDA’s
Administrative Law Judge
John G Liebert ruled that,
based on evidence, the firm
had committed willful,
repeated, and flagrant
violations of the act
As a result of Liebert’s
order, the firm may not
conduct business subject to
the act until November 1982
and then only if a PACA
license is obtained
Also, the firm’s officers
and major stockholders
Albert J Grear and
Emanuel Greer may not
be employed by or affiliated
with any PACA licensee until
November 1981, and then
only if the employer posts a
surety bond and USDA
approves
