Milk reform group
continues merger battle
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The
United States Department of
Justice moved in the U.S
District Court m Vermont
for entry of final consent
judgment in December, and
today the National
Association for Milk
Marketing Reform filed a
brief opposing the judgment.
NAMMR filed as Amicus
Cunae, or friend of the
court, under provisions of
the antitrust laws which
allows such filing as the
Court is making a deter
mination whether the con
sent judgment would be in
the public interest.
NAMMR’s opposition is
based on a lack of protection
for the independent dairy
farmers, and the dairy
processors in the New
England Area, and it made
several recommended
changes in the form of the
judgment to strengthen it.
The NAMMR group’s
concerns are that the
merger of the largest milk
supply cooperative with the
largest dairy in New
England will cause the loss
