WARMINSTER -
Atlee Burpee Co, War
minster, has paid $750 to
settle a case involving seed
shipments alleged to be in
violation of the Federal Seed
Act
The case was settled in an
agreement between the
company and officials of the
U.S Department of
Agriculture’s Agricultural
Marketing Service The
company neither admitted
nor denied the charges
Thomas H Porter,
director, AMS Livestock,
Poultry, Gram and Seed
Division, said the case in
volved shipments of two
containers of lawnseed that
were sent into New Jersey in
1977 and 16 bags of tall
fescue seed sent into Texas
in 1978
Alleged violations, while
not the same for both
shipments, were false
labeling of punty, presence
of noxious-weed seeds, and
germination test date Also
alleged were failure to show
labeling required for grass
seed mixtures and false
labeling of the seed as a
“lot” when it was not.
The Federal Seed Act is a
truth-in-labeling law
designed to protect farmers
and consumers who buy
seed AMS administers the
act with the help of state
seed agencies.
