Showmanship Contest in the
small arena of the Farm
Show Building.
Junior sheep exhibits show
their Farm Show lambs to
their best advantage, hoping
the win the favor of the
judge’s eye.
The Junior Sheep Blocking
and Grooming Contest
follows at 3 p.m in the small
arena Fifteen 4-H and FFA
members, selected as the
best groomers m their
counties and regions, are
given a sheep “fresh from
the field” in this contest.
The youngsters then have
one hour to wash, card and
trim their animal to its best
advantage. Judging is based
on the unproved appearance
of the sheep.
The popular Northeast
Regional Sheep to Shawl
Contest begins in the small
arena beginning at 5.30 p.m.
Eleven teams of five
members each represent
Pennsylvania, New Jersey,
Maryland and Virginia.
During the contest, each
team shears a sheep, spins

the wool into yarn and
weaves a shawl.
Judging is based on team
identification, skill and
workmanship, design of the
shawl and speed. The top six
shawls are auctioned to the
crowd following the contest.
Action on Thursday, Jan.
15 switches to the large
arena where the Junior Beef
Showmanship contest begins
at 3:30 p.m , the last class of
the 1981 Junior Beef Show
The contest is open to those
youth who have participated
in the Junior Steer Show and
Junior Breeding Show.
Competition is broken down
into three classes, eleven
years and younger, 12-14
year old and 15 and over. The
champion showman is
selected from the top in
dividual showman in each
class.
The Young Auctioneers
Bid Calling Contest is an
advertisement for itself, as
young auctioneers start
Getting an animal ready for competition takes
time, skill, and a lot of elbow grease. It's a hectic,
harried week for most exhibitors.

Another people oriented
contest, the Safe Tractor
Driving Contest, begins at
noon on Friday, Jan. 16 m
the large arena Earlier in
the day, young tractor
drivers are given a written
examination, testing their
knowledge of tractors,
equipment and handling.
At noon, the participants
take to the tractor driving
and handling course. Con
testants demonstrate safe
and skillful practice of
operating farm tractors and
farm equipment.
