Announces new ration
for stressed pigs
ST. LOUIS, Mo - Hog
producers concerned with
stress-related setbacks in
baby pigs and newly shipped
feeders now have the option
of feeding a new ration from
Ralston Purina Co. for
mulated nutritionally for
pigs subjected to adverse
weather or transportation.
Appropriately named
Stress Chow, the nutritional
formulation of this complete
17 percent protein ration
helps farmers compensate
for below-normal con
sumption by providing a
strong concentration of
amine acids, vitamins and
minerals in the highly
palatable Ett form, ac
cording to Bud Harmon,
Puma’s director of swine
research
“No matter what you do,
no matter how hard you try,
pigs are sometimes sub
jected to cold, wet and drafts
in conventional nurseries,”
Harmon explains “Stress is
also a problem with feeder
pigs coming straight off the
truck Shipping puts a real
strain on a pig’s system, and
can set you back a week or
more ”

Harmon points out The new
ration is also available with
optional antibiotics to meet
the needs of an individual
hog producer in combating
disease, he adds.
Purina recommends that
producers wait one or two
days after weaning before
introducing Stress Chow to
pigs to avoid changing feeds
the same day the animals
are Weaned and moved into
the nursery The ration
should not be fed to pigs
weighing less than 15
pounds
"When used as a receiving
ration, Stress Chow should
be fed free-choice for the
first 14 days after airival,”
Harmon suggests, noting
that pigs under severe stress
conditions can be kept on the
feed for up to three weeks if
necessary “In all cases,
farmers should keep the feed
fresh by filling the feeders
with no more than a one- to
two-day supply.”
