McKean extension
director to retire
SMETHPORT - C.E.
Graver, McKean County Ex
tension on Penn State’s Ex
tension Service staff, will
retire December 31 with
over 31 years of service.
A native of Cherry Tree,
Cambria County, he was ap
pointed to the Extension Ser
vice staff in 1949 as assistant
Lancaster County agent.
Several years later he
transferred to Blair County
agent and was promoted to
McKean agent in 1956.
In 1978 he was named
senior Extension agent, the
highest rank attained in
county extension work.
Graver earned two
degrees from Penn State; a
bachelor of science in 1949
and master of agriculture in
1964. During World War 11,
he served m the U.S. Army
Air Force
The retiring extension
agent conducted a five-year
study to compare the use of
40 different lime and fer
tilizer application rates on
McKean County soils.
The study, conducted in
cooperation with Penn State
agronomy specialists and
the Soil Testing Laboratory,
measured the effects of crop
production at various fertili
ty levels
Graver initiated a McKean
County mastitis survey to
determine the prevalence of
the disease in cow herds.
This was followed by an in
tensive educational program
on mastitis control.
The extension agent
assisted numerous farm
families with aspects of
farm and home financial
management He also
assisted dairymen with
manure management pro
blems and barn remodeling
plans.
He has been on the staff of
the All-American Dairy
Clai
Show and Pennsylvania
Farm Show He served the
Extension Service on
various district, regional,
and statewide committees in
the areas of agricultural and
natural resources
Graver has effectively
used radio programs,
newspaper articles, and
newsletters to report
agricultural information to
HOG producers;

In 1972 he was winner of a
Distinguished Service
Award from the National
Association of County
Agricultural Agents for his
service to McKean County’s
agriculture.
Craver is a member of the
Pennsylvania and National
Association of County
Agricultural Agents,
Masons, and Epsilon Sigma
Phi, Extension honorary
society.
He is married to the
former Polly Hockey, of
Petersburg. They are the
parents of a son and
daughter.
