ClO—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, December 13,1980 HERSHEY - The need for more effective com munication of the farm story has been stressed time and again among farm organizations. The diminishing number of farmers, consumer ac tivism, big-city political clout and a variety of other reasons are often cited as the basis for the need of more farmer involvement in telling their story. But, how does a farmer, who spends endless hours in the field, acquire the skills of communication so necessary to tell his story 7 It’s a problem that needs to be solved, and Sperry New Holland recently completed a tnal program that may help set the direction some farm organizations may take in the future. Working with the National Farm and Power Equipment Dealers’ Association (NFPEDA) and the American Agri-Women (AAW), the farm machinery manufacturer trained more than 70 future agriculture spokespersons in “effective Delaware County elects nutrition officers MEDIA The Delaware County Nutrition Education Council recently elected officers for 1980-81 Ac cording to Maryetta Domcott, extension home economist with the Delaware County extension Service of Penn State, the following officers were elected Chairman, Elaine Brown, Nutrition Education Specialist with the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, Co-Chairman, Maryetta Domcott, extension home economist; Secreatry, Edith Tarbet, R.D , nutrition educator with Delaware County Nutrition Program, COSA, Treasurer, Kathy Stroh, R D. Shreiber’s day-long course kept participants busy preparing their own brief talks, delivering them before a group of twelve other trainees and then watching themselves on video tapes. At the AAW national convention at Hershey, Pa., (Nov 10-13) sixty farm and ranch women signed up for the course over a five-day period “Interest was so great that we had women stay for an extra day at the end of the convention so they could go through the program,” says Coordinator, Greta C Vairo, Extension Home Economist. The council is composed of persons holding a college degree in nutrition, food service, home economics, or related fields who want to make sound nutrition in formation available to residents of Delaware County. Gail McPherson, a Penn sylvania fruit grower and convention coordinator The Sperry New Holland effective speaking program is just one of the many directions the company has taken in helping farmers communicate their story of productivity and economic importance to the Nation. In the past the firm has produced brochures, radio tapes, motion pictures, newsfeatures, cartoons, restaurant placemats and other message forms. “But, nothing is more convincing than hearing a person who has farm background talking about farm problems and ex periences,” says Schreiber. “If the results of our program show merit it could signal us - and other agribusiness firms - that we have a great opportunity to help make farmers and ranchers even better at telling their own story. ’ ’ LEIDY’S PORK PRODUCTS v * Badger Northland’s Bale Chopper Handles Them All - Corn Stalks, Hay or Straw Reduce labor and cut bedding costs up to 40% with the new Badger Northland Bale Chopper No more breaking and shaking bales with this handy unit It easily chops and spreads any type of baled material all in one single operation Makes low quality hay more palatable and improves the operation of manure transfer pumps Individually adjustable doors allow bedding distribution to both front and rear as well as to the manure gutter Big 16 tires and swivel caster wheel make maneuvering effortless And the handy storage rack for extra bales insures nonstop bedding Available with either 4 5 hp or 6 5 hp gasoline engine or 3 hp and 5 hp electric motor Save time and money with the i new Badger Bale Chopper See I your Badger dealer today (_A techn* SEE YOUR LOCAL BADGER DEALER «Hs r ROY CHRISTMAN PIKEVILLE EQUIPMENT FARM SERVICE RDI | NC .
