they’re friends We are on a first-name basis It’s just an
up kind of business ”
In addition to creating decorations, Pattie does a lot of
specific things for peoples’ homes where they bring her
swatches of drapery or furniture fabric She also does
customer decorations for weddings, including decorating
the church and the reception and making bouquets and
corsages for the whole wedding party
She tries to keep a pictorial record of some of her work
for future reference and ideas, although each one remains
unique because of the combination of materials used
It’s difficult to imagine Pattie as anything but “up” but
during our conservation she became quite thoughtful in
speaking about a commitment she and her family made
as a result of the accident at Three Mile Island, a short
three miles across the fields from their secluded wooded
home.
“We made a commitment to do what we can Our home
was a meeting place for people from 12 communities,” she
said They helped in organizing the Coalition for
Renewable Energy Resources, a group which wants to
show people what options are available “Maybe we do not
need that radioactive hot spot,” Pattie suggests
“We thought we had to stand up and be counted and to
learn to be caretakers ” Because of their commitment to
that cause, Pattie’s business took a back seat for about six
months, and she is now ready to bring it back to where it
was previously
As the Christmas season draws near, Pattie says, “We
go all out for Christmas, and have something for every
room. We have a lot of meaningful ornaments.” She is
hoping to sprinkle milkweed pod filling over their tree this
year and decorate it with sunflower and milkweed pods
sprayed a light color, other natural ornaments and some
red for color
The Longeneckers are active in the Elizabethtown
Church of the Brethern, which plays a large part in their
lives In addition to their responsibilities at home, both
children take Suzuki violin lessons which is also time
consuming And, of course, they all participate in the
business, if simply by cooperating with chores at home
To Pattie and her family, the Berry Patch is more than
a business - it seems to be an extension of the lives they
lead Allowing others to bring nature into their homes
brings Pattie joy and gives her the opportunity to share
the inspiration she receives from rural living

Juniors, this week we feature ice cream' Nothing will
go better with Christmas than chocolate cheese layer bars
and ice cream Mom will make you Christmas nog from
her recipe section and you can make ice cream candy for
her
For fun this week, try making our Christmas doll You
can buy bright colorful tin foil in the stores now, usually a
red or a green color, or you can use mom’s regular silver
foil
Crush one piece of foil into the size and shape of a potato
or onion (for a smaller doll) Crush another one into half
that size for the head Make sixteen walnut-size balls
three for each arm, four for each leg and two crushed for
feet
imc mese together with thin wire or sew with fishing
string
Make a face with sequins and buttons held with straight
pins pushed into the foil Use red nail polish to draw a
mouth
Tie a long one-inch-wide piece of material around the
neck for a scarf, and finish decorating the way you want
This doll is light enough to hang on your tree or bright
enough to set on top of a package under the tree Or just
play with it and have a Merry Christmas
Another idea is to save 'hose walnut shells Walnuts are
a traditional Christmas nut and are in great abundance
this year If mom has them on your table, you can eat
them and then make a boat from the shells
Push the pointed edge of a toothpick into a triangular
piece of paper light enough so the boat won’t tip over
Then, using plenty of glue, attach it to the inside of the
shell and hold it till it’s dry
These boats are a small bit of fun for you and your
friends to play with Or why not load your tub with them
the next tune you take a bath and make bathtime a treat 9
And when you’re finished playing try one of these
yummy recipes Remember nothing goes with Christmas
like ice cream and cookies'
