KUTZTOWN - The 1980
Berks County DHI banquet
and Awards program was
held last Friday, at the
Kutztown Grange. Ap
proximately 250 Berks
County dairymen attended.

County DHI Association
President presided over the
meeting and introduced the
speakers who this year were
all Berks County dairymen
Each was the recipient ot
one of this year’s production
awards, and each was
requested to spend some
time discussing their
respective management
programs
This year, high herd for
milk was that of Charles and
Tun Kisslmg with a yearly
average of 22,182 pounds.
High fat herd was Hemdel
Farms Inc. owned by George
and Glen Seidel with a
yearly average of 775 pounds
of butterfat
The top milk cow in the
county was owned by F.M
Brown’s Sons, Inc with a 305

George Troutman received a plaque honoring
him as owner of the cow with the highest lifetime
milk production record in Berks County.

Berks County honors top DHIA herds
day lactation record of 30,332
pounds of milk.
Andrew Stoltzfus owned
the top fat cow in the county
with a 305 day lactation
record of 1244 pounds of fat
This year two new
longevity awards were
added with George Trout
man being recognized as
owner of the cow with the
highest lifetime milk
production record and Ray
Seidel was recognized as the
owner of the cow with the
highest lifetime butterfat
record.
Of the county’s 171 herds,
164 completed records of 400
pounds milk or better
Average milk production per
cow was 14,813 pounds milk
and 554 pounds fat with a 3 7
test.
Berks County dairymen
averaged $1220 return over
feed costs, about $5O ahead
of the state average of $ll6B
Figures were computed on
the 11,085 cows on DHIA in
the county

The USDA reported that
the wholesale price of Grade
A butter at Chicago for
November was $1.4760 per
pound and the nonfat dry
milk price $ 9333 per pound,
f.o.b. plants in the Chicago
area.
