with dried flowers
UNIVERSITY PARK -
Days are getting colder,
shorter and a little drearier
as winter approaches. For a
cheery effect, to offset the
drabness of winter, try
decorating with colorful
dried flower arrangements,
suggests Mary Saylor, arts
specialist at Penn State.
The size, pattern and color
of the container you use are
important considerations
when planning your
arrangements. A container
should never overshadow the
dried flowers or weeds - the
flowers should be the center
of attention.
The size and shape of the
container dictate the type of
arrangement best suited to
it. Oval or round containers
are best for circular
arrangements, while tall

containers look best with
vertical designs.
A number of containers
can be found around the
home, says Mrs. Saylor.
Consider kitchen utensils
such as bean pots, wooden
cutlery boxes, butter bowls,
earthenware jars, crocks,
and kettles.
All types of baskets, pit
chers, canisters, black iron
pots and many kinds of
pottery containers are also
good for holding
arrangements. Most metals
such as brass, pewter, iron,
aluminum and bronze make
effective containers too.
Think about where the
arrangement will be placed
and the types of dried
flowers and weeds you plan
to use when choosing con
tainers, Saylor says.
