The Largent name has
been a familiar one in the
Hereford industry for 80
years. His grandfather
entered the registered
Hereford business in 1901
and was one of the first
Hereford breeders in Texas
to exhibit his cattle
nationally.
David’s father, Roy, was a
nationally known breeder,
exhibitor and livestock
judge, and served as
president of the American
Hereford Association m 1952.
Largent and family moved
from Texas m 1969 when the
operation near Wilsall, Mt.,
was purchased. Presently,
the operation totals some 200
registered and 250 com
mercial cows. The Largent
operation is a family one
with wife Freda and sons
Mark and Steve and their
families actively involved in
the ranch operation.
David Largent is a veteran
of World War II and attended
Texas Christian University.
He has been a familiar face
on the show circuit at major
shows and sales for many
years.
In the late 1950’5, he
served as manager-of the
Hershede Ranch m Arizona,
and since that tune has been

First warning of the storm
came m the staccato taps of
sleet at the living room
windows.
Sleet. Of all of Nature’s
spectacular outdoor displays,
ice storms are among die
most bittersweet with their
blend of beauty and
devastation. And last week’s
was a memorable one.
The sleet began crusting
on trees and roofs shortly
after it began in later af
ternoon. With each hour, the
thin coating thickened,
bending branches and
weighing electric lines.
Moments ot sudden
darkness throughout the
evening told the growing
threat to our rural electric
cooperative lines, strung
across mdes of windswept of
open valleys and through
wooded areas slowing
bending under the persistent
sleet. Just so it would hold
until the milking was over!
Late night crashing noises
suggested that a warming
trend was underway and the
roar was of avalanches of ice
tumbling from the high tin
roof of the house into the
yard below.
With the next morning's
light, we saw that the road
had indeed come from
tumbling - but it had been
limbs from off the big
maples surrounding the
house, and not ice from the
roof.
The backyard looked like a
lumberjack’s aftermath.
One foot-diameter mam limb
had mashed the end of the

woodshed roof while
managing to pm the shed’s
door shut with a heavy side
branch. Naturally, the wood
saw was inside the jammed
door.
But what a glorious world
surrounding us! The woods
beyond the pasture had
become a crystalline
fairyland. Instead of the
backs of the houses we
usually see hidden in the
trees was a silvery
encrusted setting where
dainty gossamer branches
did a slow ballet in the wind.
Each blade of grass in the
backyard was perfectly
encased m its own see
through shiny coat, shat
tering mto bits under our
footfalls.
Up the side of the silos, a
whimsical icy fringe hung
from each curved metal
piece on the ladder safety
cages.
And the pines drooped
sorry and low, weary from
supporting pounds and
pounds of ice.
For nearly two days, the
wind rattled and clanged in
the ice-clad limbs, littering
the ground with more
branches and showering us
with ice bits when we ven
tured outside.. Finally
sunshine smiled upon the
shining scene and its
welcome warmth turned the
tinkling ice to soggy dnps.
But the legacy of the ice
remains: a useful stack of
firewood and one hole in the
roof. And the sparkling
beauty was almost worth it.
