Game Commission per sonnel recently handled the biggest bear ever recorded in the state, but there’s at least one more that is even larger. The bear caught recently was making a nuisance of himself by upsetting gar bage cans. Game Com mission personnel trapped the bruin, and found it had been previously trapped, in 1975, in the Promised Land area of Pike County. At that tune, the bear weighed 368 pounds It was trapped and marked in a routine research operation. In some Game Com mission bear research, ef forts are made to chart the course and movement of bears, but no special significance was attached to this particular bear at that time. Bear weights are usually near their low mark in the spring of the year, and in the spring of 1977 the bear weighed 519 pounds. The bruin obviously returned to his home area from Bradford County, and was caught again by Game Commission personnel in response to complaints about his habit of rum maging around in Lackawanna County gar bage. When caught this year, the 10-year-old bear weighed 650 pounds, the largest bear weight ever recorded in Pennsylvania. He had a chest girth, when caught, of 64 inches. This time, a radio was attached to the brum, and Game Commission per sonnel have been monitoring GRAIN EQUIPMENT Cardinal Jr. PORTABLE ELEVATORS 8’ to 28’ • Timken Roller Bearings • Electric or Gasoline Powered Engine • 360° Rolled edge gives strength, rigidity, safety Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 22, 19 M-69 his movements since his most recent release.
